Larkin & Smith Pattern

Turns out, there is a lot of information out there about men’s 18th century shirts. I have by now completely overwhelmed myself with information (which I have a tendency to do. Ugh.) After researching a myriad of patterns on the Internet and some tutorials, I decided to order this manual from Larkin & Smith.

Wow! This was, hands down, one of the best historical sewing experiences I have ever had! I cannot say enough good things about this guide. The manual takes you step-by-step through the 18th century construction process, just like it was done in the 18th century- no short cuts here!

Neck gussets worked with “the stitch”

The immense amount or research that went into this manual is clearly sourced and footnoted with lots of images from period etchings and paintings. The sewing techniques are explained completely with excellent diagrams and photographs. There are charts and instructions for different sizes and different styles depending on time period and social class.

This manual is a treasure! And should be in the library of anyone who works with 18th costumes.
